Location: Kasubi, Uganda

Yesterday was a day of superlatives. We saw the biggest thatched hut on earth, the oldest stuffed leopard in the world, and the first steel cannon in Uganda. We weren’t at a museum. We were at the Kasubi Tombs, the burial place of the last four kings of Buganda. The Buganda Kingdom, which has been preserved sine the 13th century, makes up the largest ethnic group (6 million people) in Uganda. Having heard stories about East Africa prior to colonization and the brutal impacts of westernization on culture it was interesting to learn about a culture that has managed to thrive alongside these changes. Prior to British influence, the Buganda had a parliament which is used even today. The Buganda government still plays a role in the lives of its members.

While visiting the tombs we were given a tour by a member of the royal family. It is unique experiences like these that have enticed us to travel to East Africa.
